our history

REBUILDING NEIGHBORHOODS
SINCE 1974

Salt Lake Neighborhood Housing Services was incorporated in 1977 in response to neighborhoods becoming blighted as a result of disinvestment and red lining. Government maps that outlined areas where diverse residents lived and were deemed risky investments. Residents, lending institutions, and Salt Lake City government came together to raise funds to establish the first community development corporation in Salt Lake City to focus on neighborhood revitalization. During this same time at the national level, urban renewal resulted in the creation of Neighborhood Reinvestment in 1978. In 2007, as part of a national branding initiative, dozens of network organizations started using the NeighborWorks name. Salt Lake Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. was approved and licensed to start doing business in 2008 as NeighborWorks Salt Lake.

Permission by Salt Lake Neighborhood Housing Services founding board members was secured prior to the doing business as NeighborWorks. The founding board was supportive with the name change recognizing the organization was doing more than just housing.

The NeighborWorks® Salt Lake vision statement of “Rebuilding Neighborhoods…One Block at a Time” has been visibly and successfully demonstrated in its target neighborhoods, including a large geographic area on Salt Lake City’s west side running from 1000 North to 1700 South, and from 300 West to Redwood Road. These boundaries include all or a portion of the Fairpark, Guadalupe, Rose Park, Glendale, Poplar Grove, and West Capitol Hill neighborhoods.

In addition to our Salt Lake City Area, Murray City has taken an important step in addressing housing needs identified in the Housing Market Analysis adopted by the City Council in the spring of 2009 by partnering with NeighborWorks® Salt Lake. NeighborWorks® Salt Lake has established a Murray office to work in collaboration with the City and Redevelopment Agency of Murray to provide additional housing services to the residents of Murray and to facilitate neighborhood revitalization in its Murray target neighborhoods. NeighborWorks® Salt Lake has a proven track record of visible positive results in its target neighborhoods. We hope you will consider NeighborWorks® Salt Lake as a housing and neighborhood resource, and contact us with questions or additional information on our programs.
