Westside Leadership Institute Spanish class in session

28 April 2015

The Westside Leadership Institute Spanish Class is currently taking place at the Community Learning Institute. Twenty-seven students from diverse backgrounds are working on four projects (Immigration, Child Abuse, Adults attending post-secondary education and Substance Abuse) that will positively enhance the community. These projects will be completed by the end of March and each team will develop a presentation to seek sponsors and partnerships.

After graduation students are encouraged to apply for a matching grant through NeighborWorks Salt Lake and University Neighborhood Partners to kick off their projects.

Summary of program:

The Westside Leadership Institute (WLI) offers leadership workshops taught by University faculty and community leaders to support west side residents of Salt Lake City to become catalysts for positive change in their communities. WLI is organized as a partnership between University Neighborhood Partners (UNP), NeighborWorks Salt Lake and the University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute. We offer the Twelve-week Westside Leadership Institute course twice a year. Our Spanish curriculum runs from January-May and our English curriculum runs from September to December.

Purpose:

After graduation, the WLI connects these new leaders to local decision-making bodies, funding sources, and further support. Our graduates have gone on to chair PTA boards, join the boards of organizations like NeighborWorks Salt Lake and University Neighborhood Partners, participate in community councils, and work as advocates for their communities.
